Hello.
I may have spoken with some of you previously here on the network, but for those whom I haven't yet, my name is Shinobu and I was part of the last group of arrivals.

As I'm sure you're all aware by now, prior to our drop off to Red Wings (or any other location in the interim), we are under the influence of a compliance drug and are directed to Red Wings first before the safe house to settle in and wait for our IDs.
From what I gathered, El has been our primary contact whenever there is a new group of Displaced; a message is sent to all of us in the hopes that at least a few of us will be able to retrieve them and bring them to the safe house.
Lately, the protocol seems to have changed somewhat.

The purpose of me reaching out to you is to see if any of you would be interested in becoming part of a welcome committee, of sorts. To help meet new Displaced, regardless of where they're dropped off; to explain our situation as best we can and help flush the drug from their systems before shuttling them off to the safe house where they're to be held for the next four days.
I believe having a set group of people to do this will help alleviate the tensions between older and newer Displaced, as well as to ease the transition of newer Displaced being integrated into society.

Some of us have been here for quite some time and have settled into our new lives; I realize not everyone is available at all times to help. But given that I've yet to find my place in this world, I'd like to place my focus in assisting in this way. Of course, I'm but one person, and should I find my way home somewhere down the line, I'd feel better knowing there will be someone taking care of things in my stead.

If you have any suggestions or are interested in becoming a part of this group, please let me know. I intend to message El with our contact information so that we can be notified when the next batch of arrivals show up. Currently, I'm looking into creating an antidote for the compliance drug we've been injected with. This will take time, but if anyone would be able to assist or if you have any information regarding it, please let me know as well.

For the record, I am a doctor for the organization I work for back home and have a background in pharmacology; the antidotes I'd created previously were to counteract poisons found in demons.
While this application isn't exactly the same, given time and through some trial and error, I'm hoping to be able to create something that can be administered to future new arrivals.

Thank you for your time.

[ ooc: tldr, shinobu is looking to gather a permanent group of people to help new arrivals after they're dropped off! here is the plot engagement thread for your reference. feel free to PM me on this journal or on plurk at [plurk.com profile] wooloos if you have any questions; this is mostly to gauge interest as well as to come up with a plan in case the group drops/is swept between arrivals.

i'd like to also ask if you could please keep private threadjacks to character inboxes, thank you!

[ he once said he felt no need to commemorate the displaced and there is an element of broom eating here, but still yusuf presses on because this is wider than the displaced themselves. ]

I'm looking for artists amongst us, specifically visual artists at the moment but I'm looking into an acoustic guitar so keep that on the back burner.

I'm painting a mural, different scenes of humanity helping each other in the wake of everything we and they have lived through lately. We are all from different places and from different lived experiences, but art is a form of communication that can translate experiences across time and space.

[ there is an attachment which opens into the beautifully sketched rough draft of a mural that spans at least five buildings. along with quotes like "they cannot see that we must lay one brick at a time, take one step at a time - dorothy day" and "but judgment shall be revealed as water, and justice as a mighty torrent" and a number of the sentiments from his aerie posters ("while i breathe, i hope", "we cannot be caged"), the mural is primarily scenes of people helping people: people bringing food to those in need, medics giving care, no pasaran! above a painting of a couple standing in front of their two children, images of people rebuilding homes and planting gardens. he is clearly trying to communicate a sense of ruthlessly hopeful community.

(there's a note at the bottom that simply reads: "guillotine?") ]

My own experiences here are limited to the recent past and I would appreciate any input on moments of community and kindness people think should be included. The mural can stand as a repository for New Amsterdam's collective memory. Everything makes broth.

I'm starting tomorrow night and will continue until I feel like it is completed or my husband collects me from jail. BYOB and paint brushes.

[ the plot engagement for this mural is HERE and contains relevant infomation to those who choose to team up for this art extravaganza, so give it a peek please. the actual act of painting will be handwaved but run with it my babies. ]

Think there's connection between Gold god and grief/peace combo. Maybe rage and searching, too.

When Aerie vanished, experienced Blue god shattering.
[ Which he does not want to discuss in detail, thanks. ] Was underwater. Gold-eyed animals around. Felt cold, then rage. Searched for something. Gold eyes dimmed. Then felt grief, then peace.

When monsters attacked in May, some infected people. Eyes glowed gold, turned on allies. Could cure infected using empathy bond. Contact would burn first. Then feel peaceful, then sad.

(Had weird dream before monsters attacked. Pack of creatures searching for blue. More here.)

Wasn't here July 2511. Guide mentions curing unnatural rage with empathy bond. Says it came with intense despair.

Don't know who's making sense of this shit.
[ Hence posting this on the network rather than going to someone directly. ] Seems like pattern.

That's it.

( ooc: please take any private threadjacks to character inboxes. thanks! )

Hey, all.

Brought to you by my going home a spell and returning here just about a decade later by my reckoning — what amenities would you say you miss most from home?

Now, for my part. I ain't a man of violence, but if I ever meet the fella or dame that outlawed smoking here I'd sure give them a stern piece of my mind.

For the newcomers, pleasure to meet y'all. If you're still in the process of getting settled, I'm happy to swing by to help get you situated.

What's the deal with your surname? If you have one. We don't have them, where I'm from. I'm not stupid, for what it's worth-- I don't need the concept explained to me. I know they're just... family names, or whatever.

I just wanna know... what does yours mean, I guess. If it has a meaning. Where did it come from. If you don't have one, how did you... I don't know, choose yours, when you got here?

Anyway I guess I was gone for a bit, now I'm back, don't make a big deal about it.

In the interest of full transparency this is a recruitment post. I won't pretend it isn't anything else.

The base of operations I've been building took damage in the chaos with the monsters. Fortunately it's salvageable and it knocked the price down enough to make it worth it. Unfortunately that means it needs work.

I've got the cash, but having more hands on deck would make this go a lot faster. If you're interested reach out. I can pay.

With all of that being said, I intend to get combat training up and running again. You don't need to want to put on a mask to benefit from this. Knowing how to fight and what kind of fighting you excel in is the difference between life and death. The base I was talking about before is intended to become both an area to train the body and focus on testing the limits of powers. Which means we'll likely have to make specialized areas to account for people's abilities and keep a record of who can do what. Can't make you do it, but its useful to have.

That isn't the only thing I'm recruiting for. Some of who you know me will probably know what this is. To others - I'm recruiting for a hero team.

I've been holding off on doing this properly until I was sure it can be done, and it can. Before you scoff at the idea of masked vigilantism: it works. I've come up with both affordable protective gear and a means to stay anonymous. I've been working the streets since the monster attacks and there's a difference being made, but more could be done. One man isn't an army and there's an army of people out there willing to take advantage of those in need.

And what I need is more than just fighters. I need investigators. I need people willing to play watchman and monitor situations from afar. The good thing about doing work like this is it makes a difference. You can see it every day you hit the streets. You're helping rebuild community and defending those who can't defend themselves.

But that being said, this job isn't easy. It isn't like the movies make it seem. We do this in a crisis but this is making a life out of it. You will see things that will haunt you and the very worst aspects of humanity. But you'll also see the very best. It will take, and take, and take from you, but you're giving back. This world and its people took us in and I feel I owe it to give back to them. Not everyone feels that way. That's fine.

Some people have already expressed interest in the past. Either here or in private. Power structure and division of duties can be discussed once I have a better idea of who wants in.

23 August 2020 @ 12:08 pm
I hope everyone's doing as well as can be expected, at the very least, after everything that happened. Please remember that although rebuilding is important and many of you may be involved in those efforts, it's just as important to give yourselves enough time to recover physically and mentally, so make sure you're getting some rest.

Now that things have calmed down a little, and with the election coming up, I've been trying to get a sense of who the main groups and important individuals are here. A lot of information seems kind of obscure or contradictory, so I'm interested in hearing more first-hand opinions and experiences from anyone who's willing to share. Specifically, I'd like to know more about the past actions of those like Morningstar, the corporations, politicians or other important individuals, that sort of thing, as well as any noteworthy interactions we may have had with any of the as a group; basically anything that will help me get a sense of who the major actors are and what their motivations might be both in general and in regard to us.

[And, because whenever he posed questions like this in Hadriel someone would ask, he decides to add a little context.]

If anyone is wondering what I plan to do with the information, at home I'm a criminal profiler with the FBI, for those of you that means anything to. For those it doesn't, basically my job is to investigate major crimes--murder, usually--and use whatever evidence exists to determine a criminal's behavior, and therefore predict what they might do in the future or potentially outright identify them. The same principles can be applied on a larger scale, so I'm hoping to get a better idea of the situation and where people and organizations stand.

[As a last side note, because this also came up a lot--]

Also, to be clear, just because I'm FBI doesn't mean I care about minor crimes at all. You don't have to be careful about letting it slip that you're engaged in some sort of nefarious activity as long as it isn't murder or something, and another dimension is a little far outside of my jurisdiction anyway.

19 July 2020 @ 08:55 pm
I had a few questions that aren't exactly related, but might as well be asked together.

[This feels familiar and yet also awkward. He'd gotten used to tormenting all of Hadriel with questions, but this is a new place and despite having been here a few weeks now he's still pretty unsure about the social dynamics. But continuing to be unsure won't accomplish anything, so he might as well just get into it.]

I've already gotten some interesting answers from a few people here, but since there are new arrivals once again it seems worth asking more generally: for those who've been here awhile, if you could only give one piece of advice to new people, what would it be?

Related to arriving, I've heard that some people here arrived from somewhere other than their own worlds. For those who are willing to share, if this situation applies to you, where did you come from and what was it like?

[He'll hold off on sharing his own experience just yet, at least unless he's asked directly.]

My last question is less curiosity and more practicality: does anyone know of a place that's isolated and safe enough for those who haven't discovered their powers to practice doing so? It seems a little reckless to test out new powers in the safehouse, around other people, but obviously we also shouldn't be practicing anywhere that the glow might be noticed. A designated location might be useful for that sort of thing, but before I try to figure out how to make that happen I'd like to make sure I'm not doing something someone's already done.

[He doesn't want to deal with finding rental places, let alone pay for one, if he doesn't have to.]

Hey babes!

I've been thinking a lot about how we have a treasure trove of useful skills at our disposal and we are not using them as well as we could. We should be sharing what we know! I don't mean information this time, but skills.

Like I know how to fight, and I'm also excellent at basket-weaving, pegasus riding, first aid, knitting, baking, and I know too much about Greek mythology. But I can't do math to save my life, I tried to fix an alarm clock once and broke the screwdriver, if I tried to shoot a gun without training there would definitely be instances of friendly fire, and apparently I'm an awful storyteller.

Maybe we could all offer a mini-class in something so then everyone could benefit from these skills? That could be cool! We're only as strong as our weakest link and if we learn from each other, our links will grow stronger.

So MY PROPOSAL is that everyone should come in here and offer something they could teach someone else as well as what they want to learn in turn. Maybe it won't be the same person but there is nothing wrong with meeting new people, don't be babies. It's educational bartering.

I can offer baking, basket-weaving, knitting, and Ancient Greek style fighting, weapons to be determined. I would like to learn how to unclog a sink because that seems like something I should know how to do and how to keep a plant alive for longer than two minutes. And that whole gun thing. That could be handy.

xoxo Silena

Would anyone like to go dancing? You don't need to know how, I can teach you if you're at all amenable to things from the 1920s on through the 1940s. Ain't no bother, neither, so go on and put that thought right out of your head.

But if dancing ain't your style, I'm planning on putting down a dinner on Sunday. I can't promise I'll make the best insect protein steak roast you've ever had, but it'll probably be pretty damn close. RSVP if you'd like to come so I can get a decent headcount and won't leave nobody hungry.

Hope y'all are faring well after our latest adventure.

I do sincerely appreciate your time,

- EPH.

( maybe it's on account'a his southern hospitality an' all, but he's feelin' a queer sort'a loneliness an' he knows the best way to get outta his own head a spell is to reach out to others. findin' out most'a the places he might've otherwise wanted to see for yourself ain't accessible in this new world surely didn't help his head none. )

[After Rey's post went places, Clarke has decided that separating any New Oslo planning would be a good idea. Thus: this. It's hard for her to know who all is hoping to come, but Wei Wuxian's efforts to get a list is a good idea.

She'll follow that.

But first things first.]

So, New Oslo. I've been looking into it for a while, but I've had some false starts in getting it going. There's a lot on my plate. I'm not making excuses. That's just how it is. But what we're going to find there is important.

Now, I've said this and I've even had Caroline Caldwell revise what she added to her first aid offers: we don't know what awaits us in New Oslo. At least with Mt. Everest, we have some ideas of the gear we'll need. But New Oslo? Who knows. All we do know, thanks to Rey's talks with Ball, is that these gates have been kicking around for a while. You want to know what else I learned? New Oslo makes up an entire island, what apparently remains of Norway. That wasn't an island before. It is now.

The good news is that New Oslo is a popular tourist destination. It's unique. Large parts of the city are submerged underwater, so my hope is that we won't have to go diving. It's cold. There are natural bits of heating in place, but the time of the season and the location means it's … cold. Again. If you're hoping to avoid the chill of Everest, this isn't the place to go.

Everything above sea level is a large, green flowing bit of land. It's like a park and while you can visit it, no one lives there. Everyone lives below the park, under the sea level and thus in the underground portion of the city. Make sure to grab some vitamin D supplements before you take the train.

The city isn't as populated as New Amsterdam or New Beijing. That's good, though "a million people" still sounds like a lot to me.

All that laid out, I've got some hunches on what we might need. I'm hoping that we won't need diving equipment. I'm hoping that we won't need a boat. But if you know how to handle either of these things well, let us know.

Otherwise, apart from the part of the city that's literally in the ocean, I'm guessing we're going to be dealing in cave systems at the heart of the city. If heart's the right way to look at it. We got coordinates to the center of a city, but looking at map applications, that's just the general point people would be brought to from the start.

Anyway, please reply to let everyone know you're doing New Oslo, as well as what skills you have to offer and what you might make of the information I've provided.

In light of the trip to Mt. Everest some of you seem to wish to undertake, and with consideration for how preciously few of us are trained medical professionals, I have decided to offer a first aid course at the Safehouse.

I will strive to make this as extensive as time will allow it to be, and anyone – regardless of their stance regarding mountaineering – is welcome to attend. You never know when this kind of knowledge might come in handy.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask them here.

ETA: [Bad username or site: clarke @ griffin] asked me to add that those interested in the trip to New Oslo might wish to consider learning the basics as well. I believe she is quite right – the fewer risks we take, the better.

[Bad username or site: kira @ solo]:
Hello, everyone. There are a lot of new faces around the safe house so I'm going to try to make sure to catch you up as best I can. Insomniac Ball, a city organizer and apparent leader of the religious group that have painted shrines to us throughout the city since we fought those creatures, gave us the locations to something he called “gates.” ([Bad username or site: Loki @ Odinson] and I posted more about this group HERE if you want more information.) Ball claims the gates will prove something about the blue light in our chests, tell us why his people have been worshipping us.

Whether that's true or not, it seems safe to say that discovering what's there will give us more information on what was done to us, how it works, and maybe even how it's limiting the powers some of us used to have access to.

That's why Wei and I have been working on a way to get to them, and we want everyone together on it. The two most promising locations are Mt. Everest and New Oslo.

[Bad username or site: xuanyo @ mo]
Hi, I'm "Wei"! That's me, surprise! My countrymen and I spent our time in New Beijing looking into how to get to and from Mt. Everest without setting off alarms, and we think we're at least able to offer you all some idea of what the trek to the gate will look like.

I don't suggest that anybody who isn't extremely physically fit undertake the journey to Mt. Everest - a lot of people have died in the past on that climb in the past. That doesn't mean we don't need your help. Those going to Mt. Everest will travel under the disguise of eco-tourists creating art, music and more on social media to bring attention to the new, green wonders of the world and the need to preserve and maintain them. If you have connections that will support our disguise or get us a good boat that won't sink, we'd be happy for them.

Yes, I said boat! Travel after arrival to New Beijing will be along the rivers by boat, so this is an extended trip - make sure your jobs are flexible if you want to come. The boat is the cheapest option for this trip in particular. Knowing that, we could really use people good at fundraising and awareness-raising for the other two trips we'll need to go on. Even if you're not interested in making the physical journey, your help and ideas would be appreciated.

[Bad username or site: kira @ solo]
Right, because we’d like to do this again with the other gates once we know what’s waiting at these.

Those who aren’t able to make the trek up Everest can go to the New Oslo location under a different banner. The city is easily accessible by train. For Everest, it sounds like we’ll need food, camping and climbing supplies, and maybe even oxygen tanks in addition to the train tickets. It’ll be a long hike.

I’d like us to get moving in the next couple of weeks. If you can help, or if you want to make the trip with us, we should start making arrangements now.

[ ooc; This IC invitation ties in with the January plot! Further event information is in the calendar, including when to expect an OOC info post. As stated, Rey and Wei Wuxian do not have more information currently about New Oslo, so feel free to have your characters search more about that up on the questions part of the OOC post. ]

Greetings, fellow Displaced. I'm Trevor Belmont, and I have a slightly different type of inquiry than the sort I've been seeing 'posted' on here so far.

I haven't found a library or similar resource, and am struggling with learning relevant information using the network alone. Not facts about our situation, but about this strange future we've found ourselves in. Most people here seem to be from far further along than I am, enough to work the facilities and use a very different vocabulary to mine... I suppose I'm wondering if anyone has the time and inclination to be a tutor, of sorts? Just to explain some of this technology and catch me up on relevant terms and events from the past millennium or so, hopefully enough that I can stop turning every conversation I have into a game of a thousand questions. Folks have been fairly understanding, but it's not ideal.

My only request is that anyone who responds not treat me as a fool or a child. I'm fresh out of the past, not a crib.

I've no way to pay you, yet, but hopefully we can work something out. And I do thank you in advance for your consideration.

For those of you I haven't introduced myself to yet, my name is Dr. Stephen Strange.

The more recently arrived may not know but thanks to the generosity of Morningstar we own two buildings in New Amsterdam: one is the garage above the current safehouse and the other is a bar under the sports stadium in the city.

The latter we intend to open soon as Red Wings, a working sports bar, with a view to ensuring financial independence and security for us as a group going forward. It's been in the works for a while, will operate under the management of myself and [Bad username or site: clarke @ griffin], and we're looking for a staff.

We'll need bar staff and security for busier periods. We're aiming to create as much opportunity as possible, so if you're interested don't hold back on letting us know. There's no application, no bar work experience necessary, we'll just need to speak with you to figure out suitability and availability. If you're interested in a security position I need to stress that power use is absolutely out of bounds, so experience will be a little more important here.

If any of the more financially established of you can volunteer time or resources while we get this off the ground, that will also be appreciated. Any of you with significant Cooltalk followings, I'd like to talk about collaborating to help us hit the ground running.

Any questions, interest checks, etc, you can get in touch with me here or with Clarke or myself personally via direct message.

Hi, my name is Clarke. Honestly, I don't think we've had this many new people show up since the very first time. There aren't many people left from then, but I'm glad that this time, this large of a group isn't meeting with catastrophe. I know that sounds foreboding. It was at the time, but we haven't had much like that since.

[Much. Clarke doesn't specify, but some people turned up in a facility full of monsters while she was (theoretically, anyway) living six years of her life.]

There was someone who used to set up messages like this all the time. Her name is Katelin, but she disappeared not too long ago. I know that last month, being in New Beijing threw everyone off, and now we have this large group. It seemed prudent to update you all and get this material out there to you so you could ask questions.

That guide? It's here. I suggest you read it over. I made some recent edits to make sure our circumstances are presented as up to date.

Otherwise, a few tips and … requests, actually:

1. Don't pick a name you'll live to regret. Changing your name isn't easy around here. If you picked something you don't like, you'll be known by that for a while.

2. You will get out of the safehouse. I don't like being trapped, either. I didn't trust Morningstar, either. Honestly, I think it's now pretty obvious that they were as thrown by us as we were from the start.

3. If you got hurt getting here and need medical help, I'm around to help. I really hope none of you hurt each other, but I know that this is a really stressful time. Especially given where they decided to drop you this time.

4. Unfortunately, we lost the large bulk of our scientists, engineers, and anyone who can help look at tests and figure out what's going on. We have a lot of theories but not a whole lot of proof. If you think you can help out here, please let us know. I can tell you what we've done already.

I'm sure you all have a lot of questions. I'm here to help. I'm sure the others will help, too. This is a hard time. I get it. For what it's worth, this world could be … worse. It could definitely be worse.

[Rose-tinted glasses from Clarke. She has a good reason for it, at least.]
