[ The message is out and the AI (?) known as DAWN has reached out to all of New Amsterdam in reply to the call. In response, El has created a temporary network to facilitate communication between the Displaced and the presumed AI. The network and its contents will be deleted within seven days of the posting, at 21:59. That means there will be no referencing conversations past November 14th. There can be no private filters between PCs on this post, and pings will also not work.

Those who sign into the network will be prompted with a basic input box and text that displays "Enter your handle." For this post, the PCs will be able to create their own temporary handles when talking with DAWN.

El will chip in when needed, and the PCs are free to converse with themselves. Those who want to speak with DAWN can under this toplevel. ]

Displaced, this is a temporary network that I've set up for the express purpose of making contact with DAWN. It, and everything on it, will be wiped in one week's time.

I'll be keeping an eye on everything that's discussed here and intervene if necessary.

That must be why Jovavich is desperate to terraform Jupiter's moons. They know the planet is dying, but they won't admit it to the public.

Are those the stakes you mentioned?
How long do we have before the planet becomes uninhabitable?

I bet they haven't told the public it's impossible. Uninhabitable. That they won't find what they're looking for on those moons.

They're leading their own people to destruction by keeping them in the dark.
Giving them the illusion of safety helps no one.

I don't think the worst of what they're doing has to do with those moons. They don't only have people trying to terraform the moons. They have people going to other colonies, too, believing that they can do better. The conditions we hear out of there rival the Ark at its worst.

I don't know what Jovavich was talking about, but I'm not sure it's this. People have had issues with the treatment of colony workers for a while. I think someone's even running on that platform.

Jovavich, Gill-Jade, JPG were still mentioned in the messages Cassius released to some of the Displaced, including me. Cassius wanted to draw our attention to it.

I already know it's a smaller detail and not the bigger picture, Clarke. Those weren't the stakes I was talking about. The stakes are that this planet is dying, and none of them are saying a damn thing about it. That's what all of those messages have in common with each other — proof that it's all falling down around us.

I'm sorry. I haven't looked into it as much as the others, but like I said, the conditions on the colonies aren't good. They're based outside of the specific planets. I know there is a colony outside of Jupiter, but I'm not sure what it's there for. It's possible that Jovavich already got the go ahead to find what she won't find. There's one near Pluto and one near Mars. And the moon, obviously, but that one is thriving.

These colonies are worse than the Ark because ... as far as I can tell, they aren't last ditch efforts. They aren't humanity coming together. They can't even lie to themselves about Unity Day.

The colonies are doing poorly because they're relying on humans to do the terraforming, and humans can't work on inhospitable planets.

If the AI could control the terraforming technology, they'd likely fare better. But this planet is so afraid of them they won't even build machines smart enough to repair themselves.

If we could find a way to work together, we could at least take the burden off the colonists.

[How to explain this to Jon without a) pissing off the AIs and b) failing to ignore the basic facts of this world's history and status. Because those are two things that she needs to be careful about at this time.]

No, the colonies are doing poorly because they're relying on grunt work and are seeing people as expendable. It's enforcing a social hierarchy. AIs have been gone from this world for 400 years. You're projecting a mindset onto the people that has been wiped out for centuries. AIs were likely never considered in the construction of the colonies because of what happened with the previous war.

The AIs killed humanity and almost won, Jon. I don't think even the AIs here are denying that fact. I don't know why they did it, and I suspect it's more complicated than we'll ever know. Plus, most of them are dead, so we can't ask their specific, personal reasoning. But 1.2 billion people died. The fear—while likely taken advantage of and used to support the world that resulted from it—has a basis in reality, and we can't suggest that the humans are at fault for being narrow in their thinking. That's foolish.

We're only able to talk to the AI because we're objective observers. This isn't our world. We don't have the same built-in biases, with the exception of those who have histories with AI and understand a little about them. And even then, I can't assume the AI I knew—her name was ALIE, by the way—is anything like Cassius and Lucifer.

We can't discount the fear of the people of this world just because we see what we believe to be a tidy solution. That's foolish. And assuming that the AIs are eager to be in service to humanity, that they can just be built to terraform planets and fix themselves?

You realize you're asking them to act in servitude to us, right?

Earth will not last long enough for a mass evacuation. The numbers change depending on resources and possibilities, but the timing doesn't work.
