@gaby

[ this was supposed to be one of Gaby's days off. in fact, she's not in the safehouse when the message comes in. ]

Turns out that we're missing two new faces around the safehouse.

I'd play a guessing game as to why I wasn't told, but I don't care. These two faces apparently murdered two people that night.

I don't know who they are, but I do know that they're locked up. Any guesses as to what's going to happen to them?

Genuine question. Because I don't know.

Oh, and because some of you think you can do whatever the hell you want around here: don't think the way out for them is a jail break. Don't even fucking try it. And no, Morningstar isn't in the business of breaking people out of jail, because that would be stupid.

[ she's a little angry. no. a lot. but mostly she doesn't know how to handle this one. ]

Look. You know something? Tell me. You won't be "in trouble."

Speaking as a detective, Gaby, my first suggestion would be to let the officers do their jobs. If anyone intervened now it would instigate something far larger.

What impact could telling the truth of the matter cause?

They'll bring in someone higher and make it government jurisdiction. That's not something that we want or need, but if we let anyone near that police station I can guarantee that they'll get involved. Because it won't be a couple of murders anymore - it will be a scheme. They'll know citizens are in on it, not just the perpetrators of these crimes, and cast a wide net over New Amsterdam

We'll all be in danger.

The suggestion to kill them is understandable, but obvious. By now they've already spilled what they know or spun their lies and it'd be a waste of time better spent on sweeping this all under the rug. I say we wait, speak to the third party, then consider our options at that time.

No, of course I don't. I'm just offering my two cents.

I'm sorry this has become something much larger than you're likely paid for. Sitting on our hands is exactly what we should be doing, though.

They want to protect their own. I feel their frustration, I don't want anything to happen to our people, but there are better ways to go about silencing people like this.

El's capabilities... do they extend to unregistered implants?

[personal profile] cyberlife 2019-01-10 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
This isn't a very easy situation, so I think that'd be an easier bet than the things that've been suggested so far.

All technology is weak to viruses, no matter how advanced. Could El upload something like that into their implants? Leave a trail on it that looks like someone sabotaged them, or use it to corrupt a system? An EMP might also be an option, if anyone could get their hands on something like that.

Just adding my support for your ideas.
EMP is definitely doable, MS or otherwise.
There are at least five engineers among the displaced. I can ping them, if Gaby is inclined toward that as a solution.

How did I know you'd follow-up on this?🕵

To naysay my own idea, disabling their implants or the precinct's tech would be a gamble as it'd prove that there's something big happening under their noses - it could get the government involved immediately. They could already know all about it now, though, which would give us probable cause to move forward.

Must be your superpower.

[ cute emojis even in this time of stress... ]

Fair points, though. The needs of the many outweigh the few, and we've a great many beyond ourselves to consider.

[ Morningstar. ]

A counter to your counter: Is our intervention necessary? How much could two new arrivals compromise us, in the end?
They know nothing, and their medical reports are likely to show nothing. I would assume they'll be held separately, which minimises the likelihood of glowing.
The only issue is the potential activation of their powers, really.

[Sorry, sliding in here temporarily.]

The issue is not knowing who they are. What their personalities are like, if they’ll keep a cool head or detail everything that had happened to them. And that includes the knowledge that there were others on that transport when they were dropped off in the middle of the festival. And thus, the net for answers casts wider, knowing that there are more individuals with no identities floating around.

[A threadbare link that might turn into something more detrimental.]

Murder turns into conspiracy.

[ mmmm it's a fair point, but is it still enough to warrant intervention? ]

You raise valid points. It may add weight to the other conspiracies surrounding us (the fight against the monster, the glowing individuals during the outbreak, and so on) or mark a new spiralling thread for local forces to investigate.
The question is whether this is substantial enough information to risk an intervention? Which, I suppose, depends on the risks of the intervention in question.
Which is riskier?

The truth of the matter is, we don’t have enough information to make a reasonable decision either way. We either risk revealing that there’s something more happening under their noses, as Connor said, or we hope that those undergoing questioning are surprisingly discreet.

Either way, I think it’s naive to think that we’re not already compromised in some small way.

And I think it might be wise to skew our focus to preparing for that, accordingly.

Yes, leaving them to fend for themselves is an option and one I happen to like. Markus is right, however, in that their presence itself is cause for alarm. Deeper questions are already being asked - surely.

In times of duress, the powers may activate... and they have footage on social media of members like Thor creating a disturbance with the creature that attacked the city. They'll be able to put two and two together easily. So how do we get in there quietly, without being seen, get them out, and leave without a trace?

Gaby suggests it's impossible.

In which case it's already too late to remedy the situation. Lying low and figuring out what we can do for them at a distance is important right now. I'm not sure what, but I'll definitely think on it.
