Despite Nicolò's modesty, he is not so inexperienced as to put an amateur in charge of operating theatres without thought. The theatres are shuttered right now except for medi-units which anyone can function. The surgeries at hand are non-emergent so they can wait, but someone still needs to be in charge of triaging urgent and non-urgent procedures as the hospital's staff returns.

This is what Nile calls crowdsourcing. When people actually arrive at the hospital to help, which you're all free to do, they will be given positions that befit their skills and abilities.

But please, do continue to tell my husband that his literal centuries of medical experience are not enough, especially if you are not at the hospital.

With all due respect, none of that information was presented in his initial post and his omissions — for modesty's sake, or whatever else have you — have not eased my mind on his ability to organize efficiently.

If he wants to take initiative and put himself in a position of assumed authority, it's best he tell folks why we ought to listen. That you have more knowledge and understanding of the situation is not the failing of anyone skeptical about someone we've never spoken to or observed as competent.

Lecture your fella about his approach, not us about our concern.

so: he's been working. delegating tasks to those people who arrive looking to help, organising a basic system of intake and care for those coming in in need of medical care, making sure those already in the hospital are being looked after, too.

no grand feat of medical science will be achieved here, but they can keep people from deteriorating, keep things stable. people help and he's been working side by side with a young man whose name he didn't catch when they have a moment to breathe finally, patient stabilised.

Let me preface what I'm about to say by stating that I think this is a good idea, and we should absolutely be helping while the hospital is understaffed.

However, everyone involved does need to be aware of the risk, which is that this sort of thing is pretty seriously illegal. Not that legality is something that should necessarily matter in a situation like this, but those getting involved should know not to be blindsided if it does become a factor.
