@rey.solo

i made a mistake

Riverstone is interested in cooperating with the Displaced to learn more about the people who brought us here. They figured out who I was when I put in the paperwork to change my name back. Apparently, I'm still on the UN's most wanted list, but someone prevented the UN from acting to bring me into custody.

I don't know who, and neither does Riverstone — in fact, they asked me about it.

But they know that I'm one of the Displaced, which actually explains a few things. I've been working for Riverstone for months. After I went to Everest, I was gone a bit longer than the rest of us, well beyond El's coverage. They gave me back my job anyway. I don't think this was news to them. If you ask me, that's a sign they're not out to get us, but I realize not everyone will agree there.

Now they want to talk to all of us, or as many of us as are interested. Riverstone is offering to pay travel expenses in New Beijing for one week for anyone who wants to undergo observation and testing of their power, and who's willing to answer some questions. I know that sounds scary. I know scary. The UNA had me in custody for some time, running "tests." But Riverstone claims that what they're offering is different, that we'll preview everything first.

Before you decide, I should mention ... they think they might know something about who's been dropping us off. In return for our cooperation, they're willing to exchange that information.

I'm not telling anyone what to do, and no one else should try to do that either. But if follow (this) link, you can register your information with the Riverstone employees in charge of this, and they'll reach out to you to arrange the trip.

The displaced and morningstar have an enormous public following. The world is an unstable place. An act of aggression against the displaced could cause the kind of public outcry that would make things incredibly problematic for them. Politically and economically, this world is in a fragile state.

A public following can turn on you fast, depending on who's pulling the strings. All it takes it one thing to turn their opinion and suddenly we'll be public enemy number one.
I don't think it'd be problematic for someone who knows how to throw around a little anti-Displaced propaganda.
Places like Riverstone and the UNA know this world better than we do.

Is it the right time to call the Displaced the Second Coming of the Phantom Thieves?

[ you're such a butt sometimes ]

We made decisions unanimously.

And were unanimously manipulated along the way!

Do you think Rey will finally learn when this all blows up in her face?

She'll have to take responsibility for it. This is going to effect a lot of people.

She won't. She was tortured once before. She knows what it's like.

Ignoring that Riverstone surely knows that she knows.

A lot of this is hypothetical, and your theories may very well pan out to be right, but it doesn't do any harm to try. The best case scenario is they respect the constraints of the contract and we legally protect ourselves. Worse case scenario is they disregard it and do whatever they want, which is what they've got free rein to do now but without even the potential for a best case scenario ending.

The worst case scenario is worse than that.
It's not that there's no harm to in trying, but that we work out a contingency for ourselves on top of it.
We need to be able to turn the tables.

Absolutely, no disagreements with that. A lawyer definitely isn't the answer to all of our problems, just one of the few steps we can try to take in the meantime.

[ after being chewed up and spit out by the criminal justice system, he can't say that he has much faith in it, especially not here. the only lawyer that he met that had eventually changed their tune was Sae, but even she needed a little help with the way society had distorted her heart. ]

There are some things we have to do ourselves.
I don't want anyone to get hurt because of this when we could've stopped it.

Some things, sure, but I don't think entering legally binding agreements in a place where we have no expertise about the law is that place

I mean, if you can stop her from doing it at all that's great, but in lieu of that negotiating with them ourselves when we could consult an expert in the field doesn't make any sense.

This is a game that they've set up and we're playing by their rules.
Aside from the agreement, we need something else to make sure that we can fall back on it if this turns bad.
Something that turns this around.
