Change them
Not just tools, piece parts too
I can reshape things, as long as they're not too large
which means if you give me scrap I can give you back supplies, as long as it's not too complicated

That sounds far more useful than you made it out to be. You can never have too many supplies, or people who can make them.

I imagine with practice, you will be able to increase the span or size of the shape shifting. Our powers grow over time.

yeah, I figured it wouldn't mean anything to the majority of the population, and the people who'd actually benefit from it would be curious enough to ask

In theory, it should mean a lot to the majority. Has it been all manner of supplies so far? As in, have you found anything you cannot transform an object into?

You teach for long enough and you sort of develop a really pessimistic view of what people Should know, even if they're supposed to be adults

so far it's mostly just down to composition and size. if it's bigger than, like, a hammer it just sort of... melts a little
can't change component structure, metal makes metal, plastic makes plastic
can't seem to increase mass, but I can make things smaller. if I make it smaller I can't make it bigger again, so it seems like I just get what I physically have to work with
I'm experimenting with hardness and density, but I haven't really gotten very far on that front yet

That pessimism is not limited to teaching alone. Is that what you did in your own world?

It seems like we all start off with a capped power capacity. Eventually you may be able to change the components. Sometimes it is like we simply unlock new abilities, beyond evolving what we already have too.

Worse than our limits here?

Yeah, mostly, toward the end before everything went to shit. I taught engineering at a university, like a higher education facility if you guys have those wherever you're from

Yeah, way worse. Where I'm from we couldn't even count on having buildings. The race that invaded us started ripping them out of the ground. No metal.

We have them, yes, though they are not the most accessible across the galaxy. It's much easier on some planets than others.

You would never need to buy a hammer again for starters.

What kind of technology allowed them to rip up buildings?

No kidding. Hell, I could sell hammers and do almost no work ever again. All profit.

They had these, I don't know, it seemed like magnets. These big ships that would pull buildings up by the foundation. Then open up and crush them into cubes right there over your head.

Collecting the supplies in the first place might count as work.

Hell yes they were
I might be one of the only people in the damn group that was stoked as hell to wake up here
They're gonna be sticking around until the planet's not life-bearing anymore, probably, and then they'll scoot off to the next one and leave behind a husk

Was it another version of Earth?

Yeah, apparently one of the worse versions of earth if we're comparing it to everyone else's.

It does not sound like Earth has much luck in most versions. Even here seems full of issues.

No magnetic aliens though.
