Thank you to Yalena for getting us sorted. [Sort of sorted. Sort of.] Now that we've arrived in New Tokyo and we're stuck inside for a little while, I think we should talk about some new changes that we're facing. I can't be the only one.

But first: a good number of us are here unwillingly, but we have to wait until we're fully prepped before we can go anywhere. Heading outside in these temperatures while unprepared could cost you your life. We all hate being trapped somewhere. I think that's pretty well-established. We also hate having to do anything or be anywhere when we didn't ask for that to happen. At least it doesn't seem like we were drugged, though it wouldn't hurt for Katelin and I to take some blood samples to confirm that. We'll have to store them until we get back.

As for the changes in your lives: have you noticed any? For instance, apparently I'm a lab tech at Giles Bell. I tried to set myself up for a new internship there that I could get easily, but I got ... elevated. Or hired beyond that? I'm not sure what the right terminology is here. Has anyone else noticed this? Or had it happen to them? I got permissions to take leaves from both of my jobs. And no, I'm really not prepared to work as a lab tech. I don't even know the first thing about setting up gels.

As a bit of a personal request ... does anyone think we can make pancakes in the small kitchen here? I have a craving for them. I've not really had cakes of the "pancake" variety before, but I want them now. And if you think we can, can you make them?

Have you really never had pancakes? What about waffles? I like those with a helping of whipped cream and berries.

I'm working my way through the food groups, but I tend to stick with something once I like it.

I'm careful because too much sugar can upset my stomach. But Prompto has been making sure I try more of that rather than putting it off.

The whole "food with flavors" thing is really new.

The waffles with berries sound really nice, though.

We had food!

It was just limited to what you could manage with a hydroponic system on a ship where you had limited resources and sunlight. Though some friends of mine managed to grow marijuana? I guess they figured that out for medical reasons. [Only then teenagers were teenagers about it.] Otherwise, it wasn't that varied. It was mostly pretty tasteless.

I don't know much about marijuana, but it seems like it would be a difficult thing to grow in space.
How is it applied medically?
I should grow some berries and see if I can make something close to it. It's a nice treat.

Honestly, the people in farm station were something else. But we still lived off limited rations. Working out something that could help ailments was more important than figuring out how to competently grow sugar. Or so I assume.

Marijuana has a lot of uses for pain and mental health. We had a limited medical staff and even more limited supplies when it came to treating people, so I believe it acted as a good middle ground. But you needed to be prescribed it, rather than make off with it on your own.

Berries are surprisingly resilient. We had to learn a lot about them before we got down to the Earth. They were most of our diets when we weren't eating smoked meat down there. I think you can do them easily on a balcony. [And New Amsterdam loves balconies so that people can grow a lot of green stuff.]

Do you think you could replicate what they did?
Um, not the marijuana.
But I like the idea of a small garden.
I've never had a chance to farm anything, if I could grow berries than I can make you the waffles...

I know how to grow things, but we typically left it up to the people who handled those things on farm station.

[Or the few of them that were alive following the second tragedy at Mount Weather. Clarke doesn't have a green thumb herself.]

I can try to remember some of what Monty told me. Maybe we can work on it together?

I would enjoy that if we could, yes.

He is. A friend, engineer, and one of the kids who got in trouble for stealing some of that marijuana.

[Clarke smiles remembering it.]

I'll look into it once I'm back. I haven't really spruced up my place much. I never planned on spending time in there.

[IE Clarke has never really had a place to call her own. The rover? Her room where she lived for a year in solitary confinement?

No. Those don't really count.]

Is marijuana really that terrible? I’ve never seen anyone smoke it.
Cigarettes and coke were the most popular thing where I’m from. Although, I don’t personally know anyone who has done the latter.

Ah, then we’re the same. I don’t have much room but I’m sure I would’ve allowed to have a small gardening box on my floors balcony.

No, I don't think it is. It's more that they took it without permission. Theft of any kind was treated very harshly up on the Ark.

[If they were over eighteen, Monty and Jasper would've been floated for it.]

I think we all are, but I know that gardens are a big part of life there. I think we can start with easier things, like strawberries and tomatoes.

At least ... I think they're easier.

Yes, starting out with a plant that requires minimum effort sounds best.

Not in the sense that you're thinking. Moses, right?

It was twelve space stations that came together following the nuclear apocalypse on Earth.

And I think that'd be a cactus, so we'll definitely go a level up on that.

I'm not even sure what we'd do with a cactus.

But a nuclear apocalypse? Clarke, how far in the future was this?

I'm not sure either... maybe we should take a chance on the tomatoes.

That's the future in my world. Your city doesn't even exist in mine, so it's safer to assume that won't be your future.

Yes, that is true. I guess I shouldn’t worry about things that will never come.

A more direct case in point: this world is messed up, but not in the same way.
