Gods are only gods because people worship them and have faith. When they stop believing, when they stop having faith, the power wanes. Sometimes they're too stubborn to die, but sometimes they fade entirely.

Gods are just immortal babies with magical powers that never bother to change or make themselves better, who use their children to fight their petty squabbles.
