We have organizations working to help the people of this world in their own way. Morningstar works in secret, other groups preform charity. What I propose is something more direct. Applying force to the problem, cleaning up the areas that existing authority won't touch or is too corrupt to resolve. While working to get to the bottom of who is poisoning the well.
I just got here so you'll have to forgive me asking a lot of questions to get a full picture... but I'm still not sure exactly what you mean to do. Force to what problems specifically? Things that affect the Displaced, or the city as a whole, or the entire planet? The UNA seems like a very real threat, and if by 'the people poisoning the well' you mean whoever's behind the kidnappings and mercenaries and all that, a small group will need a really laser focused plan. Especially independent of Morningstar.
I was going to save this for later but given this has already gone spectacularly off the rails: It's all related. What's happening here and other parts of the world, we already know they're connected somehow. Whatever we create will need to start small and build itself up. I want to focus on the city as this is the most familiar ground. What happens at the top, the people behind why we're here, they've got their fingers deep in the criminal underground. Poverty keeps people both desperate and complacent, and the UNA and its propaganda keep them blind. Police and other justice systems are completely ensnared in all of it. You start small and clean up small time crime, make neighborhoods safer, put away the murderers and human traffickers, you can work your way up the chain to the people that are protecting them and padding their wallets. I can't form a plan until I know who wants to be onboard and what their views are. They can either join the team I'm forming, join Morningstar, or they can throw their lot in with the people focusing on charity work.
Not at all. I spoke to Gaby and it was already understood that this would probably end up being the case. I still have some matters to discuss with El about all of this and can bring it up when I do.
Good steps. I'd be interested in knowing what El says about people working with both you and Morningstar -- I'm not with them yet, still asking around to get an accurate picture of them from other Displaced, but it might matter.
If you'd even have me, I'm no hero. But I might be able to make myself useful.
I have been, yeah. And the place I was before this, I was head of recruitment and training for the City Guard. Before that... I'd rather discuss in person, but I've got a lifelong background in martial arts and can use a wide array of weapons, if they're necessary. Even if I don't have any here.
[ Honestly, Drake's seen worse... it's just a wall, not a pool of dried blood or anything. He gets the message with the pin and heads out, since he's not doing anything else right now. He hasn't gotten a job yet or anything, too occupied with other shit. Soon. He's working on it, anyway.
When he gets to the warehouse he doesn't bother sneaking, exactly, but his steps are quiet by nature. He doesn't want to startle someone who's almost certainly an expert fighter so he just slips inside and looks around. He's still dressed in the slightly oversized clothes given to him upon arrival, but it's clear even under that sweatshirt that he's a big guy, broad and muscular.
[ he's away from the damage he's caused at this point. This isn't the building he intends to purchase, just the one he and his brothers had squatted in when they'd arrived. Like sane people.
He's dressed well. What passes for high fashion in New Amsterdam, gloves covering both his hands. he's more lean than he is broad, built like an acrobat but ever so much more muscular.
[ Damian isn't quite what Drake expected, but then... he didn't have anything specific in mind, either, so that's kind of moot. It might just be the outfit. He'd pictured something tight and dark, because the person he was talking to seemed way too smart to wear a costume like the idiots that called themselves superheroes back in his Seattle. But it's not night yet, either, and maybe he's picturing a stereotype. Hmm.
There's a lot he's going to have to discuss, but right now the smaller man (teen? he looks young but serious...) is holding out a safely gloves hand so Drake steps in and takes it, shaking firmly. ]
Nice to meet you, Damian. You said to somebody else you've been here a long time?
It's not an easy thing to discuss -- trust me, I know, I used to make recruitment posts for the Guard and that was a way less complicated concept than vigilantes or secret organizations. You did okay with me and that's all I'm gonna judge you on, but I can maybe give you some tips if you're gonna try that again at any point.
[ He tilts his head, considering Damian for another second before just coming out and saying it. ]
I figured I should tell you starting out, I've got a law enforcement background. Usually doesn't go over well with this sort of organization.
[ he'll just pawn it off to someone more personable. ]
As for your background, I don't care so long as you weren't crooked. My organization worked with the government, and even before we did, my family had a good working relationship with the police of our city.
[ Drake nods his understanding, and it does sound like he gets it when he replies. ]
It's really hard to. Especially when you know that other organizations around are severely corrupt. Is there any reason that you know of to think that Morningstar is complicit with the mistreatment of the Displaced? I don't know all that much about it since I've been here like a week and a half but I've heard some shit.
They're not our biggest fans. My understanding is they blame the Displaced for a lot of their recent misfortune. I don't engage with them if I can help it.

What I want to do is symbiotic with what other people are already doing, regardless of what they seem to think.

Thank you for the explanation.
Does it have to be either/or? Since your goals are symbiotic, would you object to people onboard with you also working with Morningstar?

the smashed in wall in front of him is probably a bad look, but he'll switch to DMs and drop a GPS pin. its an abandoned warehouse.
this whole 'don't be ominous' thing is hard for him. ]

I really didn't expect that. But no, I wasn't crooked, even if my handler was. I was undercover with vice and major crimes.
[ He huffs a soft laugh, relieved. ]
I guess I got used to hiding that I was a cop, at home and back in Hadriel. That was the thing I figured you'd nix me for.

[ he crosses his arms. ]
But no. I don't care. That background is a valuable asset.

[ Damian calling him a ideal candidate didn't hurt, honestly, but he misses being part of the Guard, doing good directly. As for the long haul... ]
I do want to ask, what do you think about Morningstar's activities?
no subject
[ gaby might die if she heard him praising them, don't tell her. ]
But I don't trust an organization I can't see every moving part of.
