hi, everybody!

i just wanted to take a minute to say welcome to all of our new faces! in case i don't get to meet you in person, my name is caroline forbes, and i run the displaced welcoming committee with @prom.argentum and @sora.sky! if you need anything while you're getting settled, we'll be around to help in any way we can!

for anyone who's on rescue duty:

• any of the cots with gift baskets are available for anyone you bring back! there should be fresh towels, a pillow, and sheets on all the open beds. 
• dinner is at eight sharp — don't be late! if you want to bring anything from the harvest festival to share, it would be really appreciated!!! 
• we are still trying to get more donations — clothes, linens, food, even activities and crafts for the safehouse! anything that doesn't require an id would be great. anything you don't want anymore but don't think is worth donating to the safehouse can go to the morningstar booth at the festival!

for anyone who's new and just joining us:

• we have a really helpful new arrivals guide that you can download and read any time.
• if you have any questions about anything in there, you can tag them in this post (@caroline.forbes will tag me!) and they can come to you. just be sure to give your name somewhere in your comment, or you'll just be anonymous!
• if nobody told you yet, the first day is kind of a headache. you might feel better if you get some sleep!

I was a private detective working in tandem with the police back in Shibuya, but something tells me that I need to broaden my horizons. I was a bit of a unique case.

I see that even more than ever, corporations have a place in this world. I dealt with a great deal of them as a detective, so I think I might be able to provide some valuable insight.

[No one needs to know how he "worked" with them.]

[gasping]

[ all that interest fizzled into being bored out of her mind. why would someone want to dive into something so boring as corporations... ]

yeah, they're kind of all over the place
my mom was a sheriff for our police department back home, but i don't think small town crime is totally the same thing

No, but it does require a similar skill set. With a large city, there's also a sense of anonymity. It's easier to be less involved.

With a small town, I imagine it's far more difficult to extricate your emotions from a specific situation. I wouldn't wish that upon anyone.

[gasping]

[ there's no emotionless anything in mystic falls. everyone is prejudiced in some way, whether or not they want to admit it. turns out, caroline's mom just happens to be prejudiced against her. ]

i think a couple people in our group either work with the local police department or the government
you could ask them if they could get you in anywhere?

You're right that I should consider it, but I was a celebrity before. It's hard to shake the desire for the notoriety that came with that.

[gasping]

wouldn't being a celebrity make it harder to be a detective?

[ she's mentally crossing secret agents and spies with actual police work here. ]

[impede]

On the contrary, it influenced public opinion to the point that I became rather trusted. It's not as if you can turn away a celebrity detective. You'll end up angering society.

[Of course, "celebrity" is a notion that's often in flux. He keeps out the part where that was it for him.]

[gasping]

i don't think people really trusted celebrities where i'm from
we mostly just sent paparazzis around to take ugly pictures of them at the beach and make up lies about their lives

And if it were a local celebrity who goes around and keeps people safe?

Your mother never had the reputation of doing just that?

[gasping]

she did, but she's the sheriff. i don't think anybody would call her a celebrity.

[ if anything, they'd call her a stick in the mud. ]

i think the closest thing we had to that was comic books about superheroes. not people in real life.

I have to wonder about the quality of celebrity in your world that people never expect them to do good because they don't do it themselves.
