@clarke.griffin

Thank you to Yalena for getting us sorted. [Sort of sorted. Sort of.] Now that we've arrived in New Tokyo and we're stuck inside for a little while, I think we should talk about some new changes that we're facing. I can't be the only one.

But first: a good number of us are here unwillingly, but we have to wait until we're fully prepped before we can go anywhere. Heading outside in these temperatures while unprepared could cost you your life. We all hate being trapped somewhere. I think that's pretty well-established. We also hate having to do anything or be anywhere when we didn't ask for that to happen. At least it doesn't seem like we were drugged, though it wouldn't hurt for Katelin and I to take some blood samples to confirm that. We'll have to store them until we get back.

As for the changes in your lives: have you noticed any? For instance, apparently I'm a lab tech at Giles Bell. I tried to set myself up for a new internship there that I could get easily, but I got ... elevated. Or hired beyond that? I'm not sure what the right terminology is here. Has anyone else noticed this? Or had it happen to them? I got permissions to take leaves from both of my jobs. And no, I'm really not prepared to work as a lab tech. I don't even know the first thing about setting up gels.

As a bit of a personal request ... does anyone think we can make pancakes in the small kitchen here? I have a craving for them. I've not really had cakes of the "pancake" variety before, but I want them now. And if you think we can, can you make them?

[This last bit is Loki's fault.]

Agreed. We'd need a trained team of individuals, ideally composed in part of people whose abilities weren't displayed during the raids or have evolved since then.

I believe the UNA was able to record and analyse our movements using a kind of combat diagnostics software. They started anticipating our actions, both natural and unnatural. All of us who fought them have showed our hand, at least in part.

Do you think you could adapt the electro-shock device you were talking about into some kind of projectile? It won't entirely remove their advantage ㅡ their armor will likely have at least one back-up ㅡ but it would up our chances, and with the right team it would be enough.

[ hopefully. ]

That's a good shout.
I can, and I will, as soon as we're back.

[ how very like keith "what about giant robots" kogane to bring a rogue but super interesting theory forward. ]

I think it could.
We say realities are separate, but that's a bit misleading (and that's on us scientists, for terming it so). In the multiverse, realities and timelines may resonate or overlap. Our jumping around could prove connective. And if we're flowing into this world, it would be possible for other things from our homes to do the same.

Excellent.

Then we'll discuss this again once we've returned to New Amsterdam.

So, by that logic, the instability already existed even before I "went home"?

Is that right?

Fun? In my house?

I wouldn't call it an idea. It was on the cusp of being one, but I can't take active credit for this.

Might make things a little messy if Markus and I manage to get our licences for the safehouse business cover and I'm still collecting Cooltalk followers like I'm the latest Mario Kart on pre-order.

Right, yeah, I reckon it's been unstable for a while now, long before we woke up on that first transport.
But it could be more unstable now, for the reasons you've said, or it could be our links to places like your home, even before your most recent trip there, have been contributing to the instability all along.

UN records are above our pay grade.

[ rip his ego ]

But we might be able to come at the flagging system sideways by building a dummy system of our own and seeing where it leads. Even high-level government creeps rely on public and commercial data to figure out what people do on the daily, and that we can access. If we cross-reference it with everything we've got on the people they targeted in the raids, we should be able to narrow down what they're looking for.

[he understood 1/3 of that but he has some ideas about that 1/3]

Perhaps if they know their records are safe they'll be careless in their speech.

If the people now in government could record what they hear at work, we could all look for patterns there as well.

One of the things I did when I went home last time involved going into someone's head to see their goals. There was a lot in there that didn't make sense, and there were people locked away in our lions that needed to be freed. Well, not my lion, but the other lions. Their life essences—the quintessence, I can't remember if I mentioned that to you before—was in there. Somehow in reaching her mind, we were able to find these minds. That's not the important part.

The important part was the stuff we saw in there. The symbolism. The desires. It reminded me a lot of where we just were.

What if there was something we were supposed to see? A clue about the instability? There had to be a reason why we were there. With everything that's happened, this is the first thing that's specifically involved us.

That's not the first time I've had something strange happen in an unconscious state. The other one was just weird ... in a different way.
