@eugene.hicks (dawn of the 3rd day, xxx hours remain)
Folks. For those of you who ain't met me yet, my name's Eugene Hicks, late of 1947 on Earth. I'm a medic and a former paratrooper — a trained soldier from those of you who ain't from my world — if that helps ease your mind some given what I'm proposing.
I'm looking for volunteers to accompany me in the rescue of a group of civilians in approximately one hour, as I believe time is of immediate essence. Not twenty minutes ago, I treated a young girl who said she escaped from a cave underneath the city where she reckons some fifteen or so others are being kept by the Arachne as a food source. Seems like they're being cocooned, possibly neutralized with some sort of paralytic. Kassandra and I scouted out the entrance, and we reckon so long as we can get people up to the street we stand a good chance of getting them all out.
Combat or medical experience only, please. If you'd like to help out in some other capacity, we're going to need people to get trucks and medical supplies from either Morningstar or PRESERVE to transport and treat the civilians afterwards.
I'm willing to bet this ain't the only place in the city folks are being held in such a manner, so another thing we'll need is anyone who can scout out other areas, track these monsters or investigate civilian disappearances that seem suspect in this especial way. If there's anyone among us who'd like to step up and take responsibility for organizing other squads, please feel free to do so in this forum.
Hicks out.
( ooc: peep the link for a miniplot! anyone is invited to join in, i'll be posting a log for it probably tomorrow once i have an idea of who would like to participate. please feel free to use this as a jumping off point too for your own squad organization if you'd like to go that way instead, as both basilisks and anglers will also be taking live humans for food! gene is also 100 percent okay with someone else taking the lead on his group, since he's just a lowly sergeant, he's just assuming that most of the in-game 'leaders' are probably already busy and is stepping up to the plate himself haha. chat me up at
vitarays if you want to hammer out some deets before you jump in! )

And, of course, as you've said. Lives to consider. I'm sure the unfortunate souls who were captured could use the help. Very good of you to do such heroics.
[ blah blah blah empathy. ]

I don't think it's just a New Amsterdam problem at this point, but if there's a central location... well, maybe we could manage an assault.
( that's a big maybe. their resources are so damn depleted he's not even sure that they'll be able to scrape up more than table legs to go after the civilians, but. for now — )
We'll assemble at Red Wings in an hour.

Follow-up question to the audience at home:
If we think this is the hive and we can't torch it, there anything else we can do to squash the source?
Maybe a little controlled explosive collapse of the tunnels
the "rocks fall everyone dies" ending?

I believe the protest was inhaling the resultant fumes and ash and finding ourselves similarly changed. Could be masks would work well enough to stave off that effect, or if we could send in sappers somehow, to do a timed detonation. Reckon fire couldn't be all that much an issue if we're all ten city blocks away by the time the charges go off, but I'll leave the logistics of that to someone better-versed in the matter.

@castiel.winchester, hello hi hopping in late dont mind me
[ not that he minds, what else was he going to get up to? cas goes where dean goes, as long as it's a fight. ]
Do these monsters have any known weaknesses? Thrilled as Dean is to use his grenades, flooding them with a toxic substance would save us the possibility of cave-in.

Red Wings. Ten minutes for a brief, and then I'd like to head out.
If'n you'd like to take point I take no issue with stepping aside.
( he is exactly enough of a smartass to make a quip about captain america under just about any other circumstance, but. maybe not this exact one, at this exact time. you're spared for now, rogers. for now. )

As for training, medically, I can help. I could help transport and be there to treat anybody that needs it.
I'd volunteer to help in the rescue but any combat training I have doesn't matter anymore, because I'm not what I once was.
I still want to help.

Just stay in comms when that comes about. We don't want to risk being too far separated in the tunnels.

Sergeant Barnes, 107th infantry until '44
I'm in if you still need hands.
no subject
I worked with some of your boys from your sister regiment in the 207th on the Salm. Good fellas, Hell in a fight. Helped cover our flank when the 9th Panzers tried to roll us over.
I'd appreciate the help.
( it ain't that he can't work with other folks. but it's a bit different from knowin' men who went through similar trainin' an' experiences, who'll know what he means when he says things a certain way or speaks in phonetics that ain't in use any more. gene ain't got no problem bein' a leader no matter how dire the situation may get, but he does feel better knowin' steve an' this fella now too have been in the same mud. it'll go a long way to unit cohesion. )

[He can fight, but would prefer not to. Besides, he thinks other people have that covered, although on that note it's worth mentioning--]
If we're going into the caves, people should be really careful if they're using guns. They're not likely to trigger any sort of collapse (depending on the kind of cave, anyway) but firing a weapon in a small space like that seems like a great way to blow an eardrum.
[Which sucks.]
no subject
Noted, but I would like to point out that we can repair eardrums fairly easy here when the infrastructure is up and running one Helluva lot easier than we can bring folks back from the dead. I do understand the risk, but unless you can scrounge up earplugs in the next forty minutes we are gonna have to risk it.

I'm with Clarke right now at Red Wings as the main physician in our makeshift infirmary, so regrettably I can't leave--if the patients cannot be safely transported the entire way to the hospital, please stop here or, if you can get them to safety somewhere nearby I may be able to meet you.

starfleet don't mean a whit to him, but the name's earth enough that he can assume future. goin' from a fella predatin' the moonlanding to one well-accustomed to a passel of his closest pals bein' from a time when space travel was the common norm has given him a bit more perspective than most. )
Fella, you ain't got the first idea how happy I am to hear we've got ourselves another doctor. Welcome aboard, though I am mighty sorry about the circumstances in which we're meeting.
I'll do my best to get everyone back to you. And once we are, you let me know if you need an extra set of hands for whatever interventions may be necessary. Got a few years' experience in operating theatres and the like. Ain't hardly an expert, but I won't disappoint.
