Is it a normal occurrence to wake up holding something you didn't have before, or should I begin booby trapping my apartment?

Does it feel threatening? Do you feel as if someone is attempting to harm you with it?

I dislike having unwanted people in my space, but I see your point. It would be easier to explain, and catching someone in the act could lead to answers.
